Part 3: This ain’t your daddy’s foam cutter

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Ok, so there are some who love to get their hands dirty and create something physical, and there are those who are enamored with the virtual world living in the silicon of our computers.  These two worlds join together in this bit of technology that offers another way to save the foam cutter from extinction, and gets those cad monkeys using their hands:

Part 2: One part camera, one part gps, a pinch of accelerometer, a dash of compass, and a spoonful of sugar makes the architecture go down

Imagine you’re on some sandy beach with a client.  Oh wait, that never happens…

OK imagine you’re on an east coast site in the dead of winter with your client.  You’ve got yourself some new fangled phone tablet thingy you barely know how to turn on, but you know it’s got all the latest tech.  GPS, camera, compass, and accelerometer.  With a push of a button and a little magic imagine handing this over to your client and watching a smile appear as they realize why they hired you.

In the not so distant future we’ll be showing our clients their multimillion dollar building designs while standing on their unbuilt site.  They’ll be able to walk around it, look up or down at it, and grin from ear to ear as they fall in love with the design.  (Note the new fangled phone tablet thingy doesn’t replace a good design. : )

Who are you calling augmented?! (a 3-part series)

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Pay attention people there’s some neat stuff going on out there.  In the next few years (or tomorrow if you choose) we’ll be presenting our designs and concepts in a whole new way.

Part 1:  “A la peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a webcam and a 3D model.”

In a world where architects are struggling to keep up with transitions from the drafting board to cad to 3d modeling along comes another leap in communicating our design.  Check out this video from a company called ARmedia.  (AR Stands for “augmented reality” if you haven’t heard this term by now you should.  It’s a phrase about to be made very popular.)

Sound Transmission Class (STC) without the pain?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I came across this white paper (Making Walls Quiet) through my Commercial Construction Management Bulletin subscription.  It talks about the use of Quiet Rock Soundproof drywall which claims that the STC’s achieved are far greater than typical methods due to potential installation errors.  Then I checked the HKS Masterspecs and found out it has been included Section 092900 Subsection 2.4 – C for Acoustically Enhanced Gypsum Board.  I wonder if anyone has used this type of gypsum board before and if they have any feedback on its quality and potential.  The product is from Quiet Solutions division of Serious Materials.  This is a good article to throw out for the knowledge of all or as a reminder of its existence.
