Emergency Departments and Their LINK to the U.S. Supreme Court

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

HKS LINK magazine is a new quarterly publication focused on communicating our knowledge and expertise about the latest issues and trends that impact our clients. The name LINK was chosen because it conveys conversations and connections of all types – among and between clients, professional colleagues, industry experts, students – all seeking fresh and current information.

Each issue will concentrate on one topic, giving the reader easily digestible information and something of value as a takeaway. All issues of LINK can be found on our website under the News section http://hksinc.com/mag/link/issue01.aspx, so check back often.

In the premier issue, LINK discusses the U.S. Supreme Court decision to uphold the individual mandate of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), and the impact of the act on emergency departments across the country. In the article, “The PPACA: Will it Affect ED Operations and Design?” the experts of HKS Team ED share their insights and vast knowledge about the PPACA and the changes that might take place now and in the near future.

Additionally, you will find ways to increase the efficiency, flexibility and security of emergency departments in the article titled, “Designing Today’s ED: 6 Steps to Improve Patient Care.”

In “Dreams Really Do Come True,” read about how ED concepts developed over 10 years ago by HKS are now becoming a reality.

Finally, HKS Team ED Designer and Director David Vincent, AIA, ACHA, LEED AP, shares a very personal story about how ED design became his passion.

We hope you’ll enjoy this, and future issues of LINK.

Hunter Speaks as a Panelist

Monday, July 9th, 2012

HKS Architects, Inc. participated in the Bisnow LA Construction and Development Summit on June 25th at the Omni Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. In addition to hosting an exhibit, HKS LA Managing Principal Scott Hunter spoke as part of a panel of local AE professionals on the current and future state of Los Angeles construction and development. 250 attendees listened as Hunter and 3 other panelists (Andrew Millar, Hensel Phelps Construction; Tony Moayed, Tricorp Construction; and Chris Barton, Hudson Pacific Properties) provided insight into the future of construction for LA. CBRE senior managing director Robert Peddicord moderated the session.

Hunter told the audience that the firm’s LA office has grown 50% in 18 months by doing diverse projects. Not all are large-scale, but developers are starting to scout for projects, and the market is coming around slowly. However, the financial condition of government clients is still a concern. Case in point, HKS was awarded a major renovation of the federal building in Westwood, only to have the GSA pull the plug.

Hensel Phelps executive development manager Andrew Millar manages the area from San Diego up to the Santa Barbara County line. Two years ago, nothing was being budgeted, even in the private sector. Now, he’s got numerous projects in the budget stages, with growth driven by hospitality, high-rise residential, and healthcare. What keeps him sleepless in SoCal? The RFP process: going through design competitions and spending millions to chase a project; money the firm will never recoup.

According to Hunter, one of the challenges is designing creative space for tech or entertainment tenants that are looking for one-story bow-truss buildings with parking in front, while their developers can only make mid-rise buildings with structured parking work. Moayed and Millar agreed that one answer is design-build. Having a team from the start working on costs and efficiencies is better than trying to work in a vacuum. According to Millar, you’re getting real-time data and construction feedback, so it’s a better end product for the owner.

Harvey Launches into Research at KA Conference

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

Thought leaders from all over the world came together at KA Connect 2012 to share case studies, best practices and ideas about how they organize information and manage knowledge in their firms. Tom Harvey, FAIA, MPH, FACHA, LEED AP, principal with HKS, Inc. and president of the Center for Advanced Design Research & Evaluation (CADRE), presented “Launching into Research: HKS and CADRE.”

Harvey founded CADRE to develop and implement relevant original research in the areas of architectural and engineering design solutions having an impact on end users, including occupant well-being and user effectiveness; operational performance; and sustainability of the built environment. Throughout his 35-year healthcare architecture career, he has influenced the healthcare environment with design research studies that reveal how architecture affects safety and patient visibility, improves patient outcomes and satisfaction, increases operating efficiencies, reduces nurse walking distances, simplifies design and reduces costs – while providing the highest standard of care.

KA Connect 2012 is a knowledge and information management conference for the AEC industry. This year’s conference, held April 11-12, 2012 in San Francisco, focused on three intersecting trends driving the future of practice : research, marketing and technology.

Phoenix Children’s Named Modern Healthcare Design Winner

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Healthcare facility designers continue to further develop the concept of a healing environment, which includes the use of natural light, views of nature, strategic use of color and the elimination of noise, according to the experts judging this year’s Modern Healthcare Design awards. However, they note new hospitals will have to go way beyond that to stand out.

HKS’s Phoenix Children’s Hospital Thomas Campus is doing just that.  The hospital received a Modern Healthcare citation/built design award.

Los Cabos Luxury Resort Grand Solmar Land’s End Celebrates Grand Opening

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Located at the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Sea of Cortes meets the Pacific Ocean, Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort & Spa Cabo San Lucas celebrated its official grand opening.

Designed by HKS Hill Glazier Studio, the resort is set along the naturally exclusive white sand beaches of Playa Solmar. The Grand Solmar is a poetic return to the origins of Solmar Hotels & Resorts and the site of the first Solmar Hotel built in the 1970′s. The property’s 119 suites boast unobstructed views of majestic Pacific Ocean and azure waters of the Sea of Cortes.

“The architecture features old world Mexican décor while highlighting the raw natural beauty of its setting,” said Sergio Saenz, senior designer with HKS Hill Glazier Studio. “The resort engages the environment and creates spaces that highlight the site – from the foot of the mountain to the water’s edge of the Pacific Ocean to the infinity of the horizon.”

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Steve Valenta, project architect with HKS, Inc., was selected to speak at Autodesk University 2011 Conference and Exhibition to be held November 29 – December 1 at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.

Valenta’s 90-minute presentation, “Collaborate with the Extended Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) Team Using Revit Server and Project Bluestreak,” will expound on the following topics:

  • How Revit Server and Project Bluestreak will allow you to virtually work side-by-side with partner engineers, architects and contractors on a single model.
  • How a real IPD team successfully implemented Revit Server to collaborate remotely on a singlebuilding information model.
  • How to set up a site-to-site VPN among Revit servers hosted in different firms.
  • How WAN accelerators, like Riverbed appliances, coupled with Revit Server can optimize performance of the BIM across wide geographic distances.
  • How to maintain over-the-shoulder-like communication with the extended team using Project Bluestreak.
  • How to overcome the issue of who is doing what in the model by using worksets to divide modeling responsibilities.

Valenta, with more than 10 years of experience, is an industry leader in Building Information Modeling technology and has sat on the AIA Large Firm Roundtable’s BIM Implementers Forum. He received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Texas Tech University.

IIDA Fashion Show 2011

Friday, April 29th, 2011

IIDA held the 1st annual CRE8 design challenge and fashion show benefiting Dress For Success on April 15, 2011.  HKS has been a fashion show participant in the past, but this year our design team was paired with one softgood and one hardgood manufacturer.  We had the challenge to celebrate the connection between interior design and fashion while incorporating our materials and the use of Sherwin Williams paint color Garden Grove Green.  The design team attended the kick-off event where we received our materials and instruction for the 8 day design challenge.  We developed a concept sketch that eventually developed into something very different.  As a team we decided to turn our 8 day challenge into a 2 day challenge and complete our garment over one weekend.  Our final design was eventually named Avant Garden.  It included vinyl pants, a wire hanger abstract skirt, carpet corset top and a flowing fabric train with wire hanger dachshund.  After all, every lady needs a dog to walk in her garden!  The design team included: Nick Tedder, Emily Becker, Jessica Kollars, Shana Russell (model), Katy Cagle, Lanee Gray, and Adelia Schleusz.  Out of 21 entry’s and only 7 awards given, HKS received honorable mention!  Thank you to all HKS employees who donated clothing to Dress for Success and for those who attended the fashion show event.
